May 2009  Insects | Buutcher's Big Boy

Buutcher's Big Boy (BBB) AKA Juul's Giant
Meat cutters do not name plants. Botanists are charged with that task based upon a system that requires the source plant to be identified with a specific geographic location. See this page about T. Peruvianus [Britton & Rose = KK242] The point? There is no seed source. It is a hybrid no one really knows what was crossed with what...or when...and in the magic land of the Andes none exist, no proven source of seed. This is a "cuttings only" variety.
San Pedro at left. Buutcher's Big Boy (BBB) at right. Both plants were cuttings taken in 2008 for rooting. Here they are 1-year later. The one at right looks like San Pedo but has a larger habit. I'm curious to see what these become as they grow to maturity.

NO I DO NOT SELL THESE; too rare, don't have enough. Have to keep what I have to propagate them. Maybe one day I will have a good supply, but not yet.
BBB has a fat, vigorous habit. I'd say it is the San Pedro equivalent of my Peruvianus "fastest"

Nevertheless it is not a classic Sacred Cactus of Peru. It is a hybrid made in the USA. A mutt, a stray dog.

NO I DO NOT SELL THESE
Classic comparison of the San Pedro (my hand on it) and BBB.

NO I DO NOT SELL THESE
Buutcher's Big Boy stands out in any crowd.

NO I DO NOT SELL THESE
Tyler discovers the Juul's Giant (or is it a "fastest?") in Golden Gate park. It is poking out of the bush above his head. What a good dog!
Telephoto shot - this is out of reach poised on a cliff otherwise it would have been pilfered by collectors. In fact, the San Pedro nearby are sprouting from the remaining stump.

Juul's Giant?
Peruvianus "fastest"?

It looks like either one. But the spines are long on the sunny side just like my "fastest" at home. I think this is a Peruvianus "fastest".

No, I did not search out the "official" tag posted by the Botanical Garden. What do they know anyway? A thing just is what it is regardless of what some human names it as.

Tyler enjoyed the California Academy of Sciences.
Proud Father
Most important of anything is that Bobcat brought home his first confirmed rodent kill when he was 10 months old. He had caught a fat gopher and ate it with delight.

Four hours later he brought home this rat which by morning was all eaten save the stinky gut sack.

NO I DO NOT SELL MY CATS.
You have to raise cat Angels yourself by the grace of the Great Cat Angel spirit.
